Last Night at the Proms (now with Video!)

What an evening we had! The parish hall was festooned with union jack bunting and red, white and blue was in evidence everywhere – from the flags forguest to wave decorating the tables, to the mini flags decorating the very British supper!

Karen Hurn entertained the crowd in true Proms style and was superb! Karen Hurn has raised over £50,000 for charities including The Sunrise Oncology Unit, Macmillan Cancer Care, Cancer Research & Children’s Hospice South West. She has sung in Belgium, Holland and toured South Australia on two occasions, singing in the Sydney Opera House. Karen has soloed for most of Cornwall’s Male Voice Choirs and toured with Imery’s and St Stythians. She recently sang ‘The Last Night of the Proms’ with The Military Wives Choir in Southampton and performed at The Boisdale Jazz Club in London’s Canary Wharf at the Barclays National Talent Competition. We were so lucky that she could join us.

The evening was organized by Wendy Davis who works with Karen at Barclay’s Bank and we were delighted that Wendy arranged for Barclays to fund match the evening, £ for £. A team of helpers worked admirably all day and throughout the evening to prepare a delicious three course meal. Guests ranged from aged 13 to 80+ and everyone had a wonderful evening.

‘Attention to detail with regards to the theme for the evening was excellent – Union Jack Flags adorned every corner, table and pie (special thanks to Peter)!  Well presented food was expertly served (thanks to the “Young Ones!”) and solidarity with France was shown through the mini French patisserie desserts supplied by “Delights” in Budleigh (well worth a visit!).  A highlight of the evening was the professional singing by Karen and (almost professional!) dancing provided for our entertainment.   Wine was flowing and a good evening was had by all. ‘  –Helen Fraser Roe
