On Friday 13th July, a lovely summer evening, class 6 from St Joseph’s School Exmouth ‘slept over’ in Holy Ghost Church. They heard about two occasions when the resurrected Jesus appeared to his disciples before going down to the shore and spending time playing games on the Maer.
All the children wrote prayers on ‘fish’ cards which were then tied onto a fishing net in the church. They decorated ‘stained glass’ jars to hold their candles on the altar, prayed evening prayer together, enjoyed hot chocolate & marsh mallows – before spreading out their sleeping bags and pillows around the church. Sleep came very late to many of them!
The children were woken early on Saturday morning at 4.50a.m. and listened to the Gospel reading of Jesus having breakfast ready on the beach for his disciples. They then walked to the beach for their own breakfast. They enjoyed freshly cooked fish (and bacon rolls!) and still had plenty of energy to run around the deserted beach!
This wonderful occasion will be remembered by all who took part and is becoming a tradition for class 6 leavers at St Josephs. We are very grateful to the staff who supported the sleepover.
