It was Lorraine’s idea – a parish fund-raising occasion with a difference, with absolutely no apologies given to another, rather more prosaic gathering, held somewhere or other earlier in the year.
Oscar’s Show began on a sunny evening after Mass; glasses of chilled Pimm’s served on the lawn by parish youngsters to groups of elegantly dressed parishioners and friends; paparazzi photographs taken of the guests recording, perhaps, just a sprinkling of the fairy-dust that was undoubtedly present that evening; a murmur of conversation and then a slow drift down (or was it up?) the (rather short) red carpet to dinner and an evening’s entertainment. Another cracking Holy Ghost parish party was getting under way!
A leisurely dinner, expertly served amidst a din of conversation, eventually gave way to the drama and excitement of the Nomination and Award Ceremony itself. Presented by a couple of smooth operators specially hired for the occasion, the ceremony proceeded with clockwork precision. Among the many Awards distributed that evening were Best Musical, Best Children’s Film, and Best Sequel. Then, amidst mounting and unbearable tension, the awards for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Film were announced. The awards were collected by a succession of grovellingly grateful recipients, each one of whom produced an astonishingly high standard of originality and wit in their acceptance speech. The evening was rounded off with a series of brief extracts from five well known block-busters.
Thanks to Derek & Lorraine for the theme & the entertainment; to Mary & her team for setting the scene and decorating the hall; to our own ‘A Team’ of young waiters who were as usual a tribute to the parish; to Bernadette for so many hours of hard work before and after the event; to Wendy for organising the superb menu and to Fr Philip for allowing us to party – again – not to mention getting all the shopping for the event!!! Yet another superb parish effort supported by many parishioners and their guests.
Can’t wait for Lorraine to get another bright idea….
